Without a Home
Pet Adoption Series

While there is nothing wrong with buying a pet—there is everything right with adopting one! The belief that pets in shelters are just unwanted animals and “never did have a home” is simply not true. Every pet in every shelter across America has a story to tell. Whether they came from a nice, loving home, were abused or neglected by their prior owners, or were found wandering lost in a field somewhere, they have a history. They were not born in the shelter. Even young pets who end up in shelters, although it maybe a short one, still have a past.

While many of the pets found in shelters are mixed breeds, there are many shelters that provide temporary homes for true purebreds. Animal shelters are like a used parking lot of pets. You can find almost every size, color and breed imaginable. Whatever your preference, there will undoubtedly be “a furry friend” to fit your bill. Unlike purchasing a used car that will hopefully give you years of dependable travel along the highways, adopting a pet from a shelter will net you a lifetime of adoring eyes, great companionship, laughter and the greatest pleasure of all—the capture of your heart.

As a connection between two souls, the benefits of adoption are twofold. For the animal, the benefit is profound. Simply stated—they know. They know you are the one who took them from the shelter and gave them a home. They know you are the one who gave them that second chance. Although they cannot speak the words, they show their appreciation through the love and devotion they give you every day. For the human, the benefit is profound as well. There is a certain emotional satisfaction that comes from having a loving companion who exists solely due to the gracious, unselfish, wonderful deed a human has done by adopting. It is this inside joy of the heart that comes from giving an animal the opportunity for a new life.

That is the human-animal bond.

Author Elaine Marlier is the proud mom of four adopted animals—Naomi, Jordan, Jake and Gracie—and one “free” puppy who just needed a home—Destiny.
